Halloween doesn't have to be all orange and purple, and it doesn't have to involve cobwebs. When you invite friends over, it can certainly be stylish: dark tablecloths, warm lighting, a touch of spookiness. Here are five ideas to make your table look great on October 31st. And it will stay beautiful throughout autumn and Advent.
1. Black on black: the dark board
The starting point is the color. Matte black dishes on dark linen look calm and elegant, and it makes every light appear more beautiful.

- Choose a Material for the tableware, for example matte black stoneware. This keeps the table setting calm.
- Focus on tonal values rather than patterns: black, anthracite, graphite.
- A charger plate placed under the dinner plate gives the table a frame and depth.

2. Candles in groups instead of rows
One candle is nice. Five candles at different heights create atmosphere. Don't place them in a line, but rather in small groups distributed across the center of the table.

- Mix tall and short candles, then the light will "run" across the table.
- Stick to one color scheme: black, amber, cream.
- Always place candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces and never leave them burning unattended.

3. Glass and lantern: Light that never goes out
Wind, drafts, dripping wax: a lantern solves all of that. A clear storm lantern in the middle of the table provides calming light, and outside at the front door, it welcomes your guests right at the entrance.

- Place a lantern on the table and one by the entrance. That way, the evening begins.
- Clear glass looks modern and goes with any tableware.
- The lantern remains in use even after Halloween: at dinner on the balcony, during Advent, in winter.

4. A single accent in muted orange
That's the trick to avoiding kitsch: Leave everything dark and set one Add color. Subdued orange (more pumpkin and rust than a bright, vibrant color) looks sophisticated and evokes autumn without being too loud.

- One or two orange plates among the black dishes, for example as appetizer plates.
- Alternatively: a small pumpkin bowl or a few branches in autumntfarben as the only green-orange on the table.
- Less is more. If in doubt, remove an accent.

5. A touch of horror: small details instead of elaborate sets
Horror is created through atmosphere, not through plastic. A few subtle details are enough:
- Twilight: Turn off the ceiling light and only leave candles and lanterns burning.
- Name cards in white lettering on black cardboard, with a short, tongue-in-cheek sentence for each guest.
- A menu with an announcement: Three courses, each with a little "spooky" title on the menu.
- A playlist with jazz, cello or film music instead of spider sound effects.
So it remains an evening for adults: a little dark, but above all cozy.
After Halloween: The table lives on
The beauty of this table setting is that almost everything stays the same. Dark dishes, candles, and lanterns are also perfect for autumn and carry the spirit of Advent into the season. You simply change the accent: instead of orange, you add fir green or gold.
