Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen from Denmark designed Mat after years of development as a contemporary shell chair, using materials that, according to the manufacturer, have a lower environmental impact than the industry standard. The hemp shell is created using a specially developed compression process, and the frame utilizes FSC™-certified beech plywood (FSC-C163461). Mat is designed for disassembly and recycling.

Die Schale wird aus einer einzigartigen Mischung aus 75% Hanffasern gefertigt, während die restlichen 25% aus einem eigens entwickelten, recycelbaren Bico-Bindemittel bestehen. Die Seaweed-Variante besteht aus 69% Hanffasern, 6% Seegras (Seaweed) und 25% Bindemittel. Bei Rückgabe an Normann Copenhagen am Ende ihrer Lebensdauer können sowohl Schale als auch Gestell recycelt werden.
