Opinel Opinel, like few other brands, stands for timeless design, everyday practicality, and handcrafted quality. The iconic Opinel pocket knife was invented in 1890 by Joseph Opinel in the heart of the French Alps, in Savoy – and is still produced there today.
Simple, efficient, durable, and affordable: these four characteristics make the Opinel knife a globally valued everyday companion. It's more than a tool – it's a familiar object passed down from generation to generation.
Opinel today offers a wide selection of products for a variety of uses:
All Opinel knives combine time-honored expertise with functional details and environmentally friendly innovations. Depending on the model, the blades are made of robust carbon steel or rust-resistant stainless steel. The handles, made of beech or oak wood, are durable, comfortable to hold, and can be replaced on many models.
The family business is now run by François Opinel, the founder's great-grandson, in Chambéry. Despite its worldwide success, Opinel remains true to its regional roots and sustainable production in the French Alps.
